Women who engage in street-based sex work require regular health care, but often face barriers to access, including a feeling of judgement and stigma from healthcare professionals, not feeling safe in local clinics or potentially seeing dealers or abusive male partners in traditional healthcare spaces.
The WISH Health Clinic is on-site within the WISH Drop-In Centre, staffed by Nurse Practitioners from BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre twice a week. Women can access this safe, women-only clinic in a familiar setting.
In 2018 alone, more than 750 referrals to other healthcare services were made in the WISH Health Clinic.
Under this initiative, WISH was also a community research partner with the BC Centre For Excellence in HIV/AIDS’ AESHA Project, which seeks to map and understand sex-workers’ access to health care services.
The clinic’s construction was generously funded by a private donor who was referred to the project by the BC Women’s Hospital Foundation.
