The WISH Learning Centre

The WISH Learning Centre is operated in partnership with Capilano University.

Instructors at the WISH Learning Centre are experts in the needs of adult learners who are marginalized. They offer a wide range of activities which offer women opportunities to:

  • develop their communication skills.

  • become engaged in community affairs.

  • develop the ability to self-advocate.

  • work toward stabilizing their lives.

  • learn computer skills.

  • Write letters, journals, and poetry.

  • Engage in arts and crafts.

The facilitators also provide tutoring for those who are working to upgrade their education. Women can borrow books and magazine from the centre as well, and WISH welcomes donations of these.

Instructors, in collaboration with the women who come to the Learning Centre at WISH,  produced a book called Literacy for Women on the Street . They have also developed a curriculum called  Dream Soup and Life Stew  that is available as a reference to women-serving organizations looking to add literacy programming. Funding for this publication was provided by Capilano College and The National Literacy Secretariat.

Learning Centre participants also publish a monthly newsletter in which they include poems, art work, commentary on recent events and announcements.

Participants in the Learning Centre also have the opportunity to go on annual outings to the Sunshine Coast, where they experience Northwest Coast culture and spend time in nature. These outings are cherished by participants and are rare opportunities for them to spend time outside of the DTES.
